Summary of Article and Explanation of Constitutional Connection
Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader, believes that under the constitution, Congress has the responsibility to declare war. She also thinks that Congress should write an authorization defining the authority they give the president as far as going to war against ISIS. This article relates to Article I, Section 8 because Nancy Pelosi is arguing that Congress has the power to declare war, and Article I, Section 8 says “The Congress shall have the power to declare war”. So, Nancy Pelosi and Article I, Section 8 agree with each other.
Political Cartoon
Cartoon Explanation
In this political cartoon Obama and another man are standing in front of a door that has “war” on it. In front of the door is a doormat that says “Congress”. Obama has a key in his hand that can open the door, however the man next to Obama says “Technically you may need to ask the doormat’s permission.”, it is inferred that the man means you have to ask Congress to go to war. This relates to Article I, Section 8 because Congress’s permission is said to be needed to go to war in this political cartoon.
